Access

From the Vésubie valley (D2565), drive up for 8.5 km towards Duranus/Utelle. Park in the car park on the left, opposite the canyon.

  • With a shuttle: Continue further, passing through a tunnel and over a bridge; before reaching “Saint-Jean-la-Rivière”, turn right onto the D19. Park on the left at the entrance to the Imberguet/Calençon hamlet.
  • Without a shuttle: Continue along the road through the 1,200 m tunnel (wearing a high-visibility vest is advised). After the bridge over the Vésubie, take the path on the right leading to the D19 (≈ 40 min).

Approach

From the car park, walk through the hamlet (approx. 2 mins), then head down the path below the “Canyon du CG” sign.

Important:
The first 300 metres must be completed outside the stream bed (using the via ferrata for small obstacles) to protect an endemic crustacean species. The actual descent begins after this section with a series of waterfalls.

Descent

The route starts after the regulated approach zone and quickly leads into a succession of waterfalls, slides, and pools, culminating in a final large waterfall that drops into the Vésubie river.

Key Details

  • The canyon remains fairly committed: the V3A2III grade indicates an intermediate to sporty level.
  • Carry a minimum of 25 m of single rope (and ensure you have a backup anchor/spare rope).
  • An escape route is available just after the old dam via a path on the true left, leading to the footbridge over the Vésubie.

Return

Before the final waterfall that ends in the Vésubie, exit on the true left. Follow the footbridge to return to your vehicle.

Season and Water Characteristics

  • Best period: Spring, when the flow is modest.
  • Summer: The canyon can run dry, which may result in stagnant pools that can become traps.
  • Always check conditions on descente-canyon.com

Notes / Best Practices

  • Environment: Strictly stay out of the stream bed during the approach to protect aquatic life (the aforementioned endemic crustacean).
  • Water Flow: Check conditions before departing; recent reports often mention a “trickle” or dry sections.
  • Safety: Be vigilant regarding the pools late in the season or during low flow, as some may be shallow or empty.
  • Technicality: Technical and aquatic levels can vary significantly depending on recent rainfall.
  • Navigation: Anticipate the exit (path and footbridge) clearly to avoid confusion.
