The Loup Valley
The Loup River originates in the commune of Andon, situated at an altitude of 1,200m in the Alpes-Maritimes. The total length of this watercourse is 49.3km.
Initially, the river heads east, flowing beneath the village of Gréolières, a spot well known to cyclists and motorcyclists, and a starting point for stunning hikes, climbing sites, and paragliding. It then flows south, carving out the Gorges du Loup at its narrowest point between Bramafan and Pont-du-Loup.
Passing the foot of beautiful, traditional villages such as Gourdon, Courmes, and Cipières, the river widens after the hamlet of Pont-du-Loup, near Le Bar-sur-Loup and the medieval village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup. It continues towards La Colle-sur-Loup and the Villeneuve-Loubet area before finally flowing into the Mediterranean Sea.
Downstream from Pont-du-Loup, visitors can enjoy canoeing and kayaking, and on rarer occasions during high water levels, rafting.
Further down, between La Colle-sur-Loup and Villeneuve-Loubet Village, smaller developed gorges offer opportunities for climbing, canoeing, cycling, and shaded walks. The Loup is also bordered by a via ferrata/treetop adventure course, fishing spots, and a magnificent nature trail perfect for a stroll through the valley.
Fauna and Flora
The Loup Aqueduct hike, following the path of the Canal du Foulon, reaches Bramafan and allows visitors to admire the geological, faunal, and floral richness of the Gorges du Loup. The route includes several tunnels carved directly into the rock faces and offers dizzying, panoramic views.
The D6 road also provides a fantastic vantage point to contemplate the gorges, particularly the Cascade de Courmes. This waterfall is highly aesthetic, as the 50m drop detaches spectacularly from the overhanging cliff.
From a geological perspective, thick sedimentary layers were deposited in the Alpes-Maritimes during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Over time, surface water dissolved parts of this limestone, transforming them into "cargneules" (weathered, cavernous rocks). The collision between the African and European continents caused the uplift of the Alps during the Cretaceous. The natural pools and slides we enjoy today are the result of this limestone's ability to dissolve in water over millennia.
The fauna and flora of the Gorges du Loup are remarkably rich yet remain very sensitive. When we descend the canyon with our clients, we take great care to minimise our impact on biodiversity.
The natural setting of the Gorges du Loup and its geological specificities
Situated on the flank of the Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes d’Azur, the Loup snakes between limestone cliffs and wooded valleys, typical of Provence. Villages such as Gourdon, Courmes, Cipières, or Le Bar-sur-Loup punctuate the valley, offering a picturesque backdrop for your canyoning outings.
The local geology fascinates with the presence of ancient sedimentary massifs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Over the centuries, water has sculpted the limestone, forming the famous slides and pools that make the site famous. These natural curiosities explain why canyoning “near me” is so successful on the French Riviera, particularly among residents of nearby districts like La Colle-sur-Loup or Villeneuve-Loubet.
How to easily access the canyoning spots around the Loup?
Between Pont-du-Loup, La Colle-sur-Loup, Villeneuve-Loubet, and Tourrettes-sur-Loup, the gorges benefit from a central location. From Nice (40 minutes), Antibes, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, or Vence, reaching the canyons is quick, which facilitates the organisation of a “near me” outing.
Marked access points allow you to park not far from the departure points. It is advisable to book your outing, especially during school holidays and weekends, when attendance increases. Enjoying canyoning in the Gorges du Loup thus remains simple and friendly.
The canyoning activity is generally practised from April to October, depending on the water level and the weather. All day long, the light sublimates the transparency of the river, and the coolness is very pleasant, especially in summer.
At Adrenaline06 we offer several daily departures, adapted to groups or private sessions (guide privatisation possible at Adrenaline06). Remember to prepare your equipment (swimsuit, closed laced shoes, towel) before coming and check your travel time according to your municipality for optimal organisation.
