Discover the Gros Riou canyon, a varied and technical route nestled in the Alpes-Maritimes at the heart of the Estéron valley. This canyon combines impressive abseils, natural pools, and playful sections, offering a complete experience for canyoning enthusiasts in a wild and unspoilt setting.
From the upper car park, cross the village and follow the stone-paved path (marked with blue and yellow signs) which descends quickly towards the bridge, the starting point of the canyon.
The path drops sharply to the classic entrance of the canyon, featuring a small abseil accessible from the bridge at the mouth of the rift. Belay point on the True Right (RD) of the rift.
The Gros Riou descent is divided into two sections :
First Section : An impressive narrow slot right from the start, featuring a large, water-heavy waterfall that sets the technical tone. There is a fantastic atmosphere in this first abseil, especially when the flow is high. The passage through the “hole” is exceptional.
Second Section : A succession of abseils, jumps, and slides that make the end of the descent very playful, even though the canyon becomes less narrow.
A technical and committed canyon with significant vertical sections.
A rope of at least 70 m is required to ensure safe abseiling.
High level of commitment in the narrowest sections.
With shuttle : At the end of the second section, follow the wide riverbed, then join the track on the right back to the Roquestéron bridge (approx. 30 mins).
The best time to explore Gros Riou is spring and early summer, when the water flow is moderate and obstacles are well-fed.
In cases of low flow, some pools can become slippery or shallow; it is recommended to check water conditions before setting out.
This canyon is subject to specific regulations; please check these before your trip.
The large “wet” abseil requires particular attention depending on the flow; proper guidance through the “hole” is essential to avoid getting stuck. Top and bottom release techniques (débrayage) must be perfectly mastered.
Always probe the pools before jumping, especially after heavy rain or during low water levels.
